Fact-checking is the deliberate testing of statements against evidence before publication. It matters because factual prose asks readers to trust not just the broad argument but every verifiable claim embedded in names, dates, descriptions, quotations, comparisons, and even punctuation.

McPhee presents checking as professional skepticism applied to one’s own pages. The checker does not merely hunt spectacular errors. A color, family relationship, historical sequence, geographic direction, product release date, or comma that implies someone had only one daughter can carry factual meaning. The unit of work is therefore the claim, not the paragraph.
Treat checking as an editorial stage with time, records, and authority to change or remove material. If it is postponed until the last anxious hour, pressure makes everyone more willing to accept a plausible answer. A clean sentence is not evidence, and confidence is not confirmation.
The writer remains responsible even when a publication employs specialists. A checker is a collaborator and independent reader, not a service that turns unsupported prose into truth.
Break the draft into checkable claims
A claim inventory is a list of every statement a reasonable reader could verify or challenge. It matters because checking only the “important facts” leaves small errors that can damage credibility and, when copied, become the foundations of larger ones.
Read sentence by sentence and mark factual atoms: the smallest distinct assertions. “The 1912 brick station stands five miles north of town” contains at least four claims—construction date, material, continued existence, distance, and direction. Each may require different evidence.

Assign each atom a status: verified, unresolved, disputed, on-author, or remove. “On-author” means the publication relies on the writer’s direct observation; it is not a free pass. Record when, where, and how you observed it.
Prefer primary sources
A primary source is evidence closest to the event or claim: an original record, direct observation, raw dataset, governing document, or person with firsthand knowledge. It matters because every retelling can omit qualifications, introduce transcription errors, or repeat a mistake without checking it.
Start with the source that could actually know. Verify a law in the enacted text, a financial result in the filed statement, a scientific claim in the underlying paper or data, and a quotation in the complete recording or document. For an event, distinguish a participant from someone who heard the story later. Expertise about a field does not automatically create firsthand knowledge of one incident.
Secondary sources remain useful for orientation, leads, and interpretation. Search results and reference pages can point toward documents, but repetition is not independence: ten sites may all derive from one flawed article. Trace citations backward until you reach the evidence, and save enough bibliographic detail for someone else to repeat the route.
Match evidence strength to claim risk
Not every claim requires equal effort, but every claim requires a conscious standard. Risk-based checking directs the most scrutiny toward statements that are consequential, surprising, contested, technically complex, legally sensitive, or difficult to correct after publication.
Score a claim across three questions: How much harm could an error cause? How likely is the current support to be wrong? How widely might the claim travel? A routine street spelling may be low risk but easy to verify; an allegation about a person may require multiple sources, documentary support, context, and a chance to respond.

Beware false precision. If evidence supports “in the early 1990s,” do not publish “1992” because it sounds stronger. The prose should express the confidence the evidence earns.
Verify by alternate routes
Alternate-route checking means approaching the same claim through evidence that does not share the same origin. It matters because two sources that copy each other provide only one line of support, while genuinely independent routes can expose a hidden premise or transmission error.
For a historical event, one route might be an official log and another a participant’s letter. For a technical mechanism, use the specification and an expert who works with the system. For a company number, compare the regulatory filing with a calculation from the underlying table. Ask each source only what it is positioned to know.
When accounts conflict, do not average them into a tidy middle. Record the disagreement, check dates and definitions, and find the point where the accounts diverge. Sometimes the claim needs a qualifier; sometimes one source is mistaken; sometimes uncertainty is the truthful result.

The log preserves reasoning when the prose changes and prevents a later editor from unknowingly restoring an attractive but disproved version.
Check quotations, analogies, and tiny words
Quotations and analogies feel literary, but they contain factual obligations. This matters because a line can be verbatim yet misleading when cut short, and a beautiful comparison can depend on a false premise about science, history, or scale.
For every quotation, confirm speaker, exact wording, venue, date, prompt, and surrounding meaning. Compare the final edit with the full source, not a previously clipped version. If exactness is uncertain but the meaning is secure, use attributed paraphrase. If context changes the force, restore it or abandon the line.
For every analogy, split and test both sides. If a braking system is likened to an animal organ, confirm the mechanical behavior and the anatomy; the sentence makes claims about both. Check superlatives and categorical words—first, only, never, all, caused—because a tiny word can raise the evidence burden dramatically.
Punctuation can also assert. Commas around a name may imply that a person has only one child; a hyphen may distinguish two technical meanings; a capital letter may identify a formal institution. Read the final proof for factual grammar, not just style.
Contact people fairly and precisely
Source checking is the practice of asking knowledgeable people to confirm specific factual material. It matters because people can correct names, mechanisms, and chronology, but they may also protect reputations, revise memories, or attempt to reshape a story.
Tell the person what you are checking and read or send enough surrounding text for meaning. Ask focused questions: “Was the power interrupted by the balloon itself or by damage to the transmission line?” is more useful than “Does this paragraph look right?” Separate factual correction from editorial approval. A source may dispute tone or interpretation without disproving the underlying facts.
For serious criticism, offer a meaningful opportunity to respond and preserve the request, deadline, and reply. Do not promise a source control over wording unless that agreement truly exists. The aim is accuracy and fairness, not negotiated praise.
Prevent error propagation
Error propagation is the spread of one mistake through later articles, books, databases, models, and conversations. It matters because publication gives a claim apparent authority; future writers may cite it as independent evidence, multiplying the original error.
McPhee’s account emphasizes that printed mistakes persist and generate descendants. Digital speed intensifies the pattern. A wrong date can enter a profile, be copied into an encyclopedia, become structured data, and then appear in hundreds of automatically generated summaries. Repetition makes the error look settled while concealing its single origin.
Break the chain early. Cite the original evidence, publish clear corrections, update reusable datasets when possible, and notify downstream editors when the error is consequential. A correction should state what was wrong and what is now supported; silently replacing text may leave copied versions unexplained.
Readers who identify errors are part of the checking system. Evaluate their evidence without defensiveness, thank them when warranted, and keep a correction ledger so the same mistake does not return in a later edition.
Fact-checking exercise and checklist
This exercise converts a polished paragraph into a visible verification trail. Choose 250–400 words of reported nonfiction containing at least one quotation, number, historical reference, physical description, and causal statement.
First, underline every factual atom and number them. Build a checking log, locating the strongest available primary source and one alternate route for the three highest-risk claims. Then revise the paragraph so each sentence matches the evidence actually found. Submit the original, log, revised paragraph, and a short note explaining one correction or qualification.
