Prophets in Scripture

Muhammad is the final prophet in Islam, known as the "Seal of the Prophets." Born in Mecca, he received the first Quranic revelation at age 40 in the Cave of Hira. His mission transformed Arabia from polytheism to monotheism. Muslims also identify references to his coming in the Torah (Deuteronomy 18:18) and the Gospel (John 14:16 — the Paraclete).

Born miraculously to the Virgin Mary (Maryam). Called Isa ibn Maryam in Islam, considered a mighty prophet and the Messiah. Performed miracles by God's permission: healing the blind, raising the dead, and speaking from the cradle. In Islam, he was not crucified but raised to heaven. In Christianity, he is the Son of God who died for humanity's sins and was resurrected.

Sent to the people of Nineveh. Left his people in anger before God's permission. Swallowed by a great fish (whale). Called upon God in the darkness and was saved. His people ultimately repented and were spared — the only nation in the Quran whose collective repentance was accepted.

Son of Dawud (David). Given extraordinary wisdom, knowledge of the speech of birds and ants, and authority over jinn and wind. Built the great Temple in Jerusalem. Famous for his encounter with the Queen of Sheba (Bilqis).

King and prophet of Israel. Killed the giant Goliath (Jalut) as a youth. Given the Zabur (Psalms). Known for his beautiful voice praising God — mountains and birds joined his worship. Also known for his repentance and justice.

The most frequently mentioned prophet in the Quran. Liberated the Israelites from Pharaoh's tyranny. Received the Torah on Mount Sinai. Parted the Red Sea by God's command. Known as Kalimullah (one who spoke with God).

Son of Yaqub (Jacob). Surah Yusuf (12) tells his complete story -- called "the best of stories" (ahsan al-qasas). Thrown into a well by jealous brothers, sold into slavery in Egypt, resisted temptation, interpreted Pharaoh's dreams, rose to become Aziz (minister) of Egypt, and ultimately reunited with his family.

Son of Ishaq (Isaac), grandson of Ibrahim (Abraham). Also called Israel, meaning "one who strives with God." Father of the 12 tribes of Israel. Known for his dream of the heavenly ladder at Bethel and his final counsel to his sons to uphold monotheism.

Son of Ibrahim and Sarah, born miraculously in their old age. Father of Yaqub (Jacob). In the Torah, he is the son offered for sacrifice. Through him came the tribes of Israel.

Son of Ibrahim and Hagar. In Islamic tradition, he is the son offered for sacrifice. Co-built the Kaaba with his father. Ancestor of Prophet Muhammad and the Arab peoples.

Lot was Abraham's nephew, sent as a prophet to the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. He warned them against their transgressions, but they refused. God destroyed the cities, saving Lot and his believing family. His wife, who looked back, perished.

Abraham is the patriarch of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam — the three Abrahamic faiths. Called "Khalil Allah" (Friend of God) in Islam, he is revered for his unwavering monotheism, his willingness to sacrifice his son, and his role in building the Kaaba.

First major prophet after Adam. Preached monotheism for 950 years. Built the ark by God's command. Survived the great flood with believers and pairs of animals.
